Saudia Young BIO
New York born actress/singer Saudia Young sings swing cabaret! Young performs with full band and in duo with guitar or contra bass. Young performs “swing cabaret “ which includesYoung’s originalsongs and covers of Tom Waits, Patsy Klein, Cole Porter and other ” cabaret swingers from the 20s to the present”. Audiences love Saudia’s sultry voice and her charismatic, elegant and theatrical humor.
Young grew up in New York’s bohemian world of writers, actors, visual artists and dreamers. Now based in Berlin, Germany.
The neighborhoods and streets of NYC had a big impact on Young’s artistic development. Growing up in a biracial artistic family, amongst the cobble stone streets of Tribeca with it’s history of sailors and merchants Young’s imagination soared. Many illustrious artists and their children, became extended family members. Saudia began performing at age ten in Ben Dolphin’s Mutual Respect Dance Co. She also began writing and performing puppet plays, short videos, and “radioplays” which she recorded on cassette tapes. Young trained formally in acting with Wynn Handman, and in dance at the Joffrey Ballet School and Alvin AiIey American Dance Center, in New York.
Acting:
In New York, Young co-founded the Well Water Theater Co., producing and acting in off off broadway productions. Young developed and performed a twelve character solo theatre play, Sneaker Revolution, with co-writer/director Kate McCamy. Acting roles include; “the Narrator” in Michael Kosch’s opera Elementary Principles, ” Carol” in Jim Cartwright’s Road, and “Bridgette Bardof” in Shakespeare’s Merry Wives of Windsor. Young first arrived in Berlin in 2006 and landed the lead role of Oskar in Hahn Film’s School for Vamipres (English version of cartoon series Die Schule der kleinen Vampire).

The Local’s series “Making it in Germany” presents Saudia Young, a US cabaret singer working Berlin’s live music circuit.
Originally hailing from New York City, Young counts some of Germany’s great writers and composers among her biggest influences as a singer. The Local spoke with her about her decision to move to the country’s capital for some modern Teutonic inspiration and what’s it like to be a working expat musician.
